(D) includes the animal known equally the killer whale, which can grow equally large as 30 feet long and is

Please correct me if I'm incorrect some where
Clauses
Cl1 32 species brand up the dolphin family unit
Cl2 32 species that.... family are closely related(Verb1) to whales & in fact
include (Verb 2) the animal know every bit the killer whale,
Now we know that for the Verb-ing modifier

-ing modifies whole preceding clause (Depict/Outcome) and non the preceding noun or the subject field
As per the explaination in the OG for option B
"Changing the verb to the participial growing

1) Please help to analyze how tin can -ing modify(thus create amiguity) the subject and not the whole clause
2) For selection B
CL2 : 32 species <are closely related ...> & <include .....whale>,
mod1 <growing upto xxx feet> :
If nosotros consider only this mod. would it be correct to say that it(such an -ing modifier) can meaningfully depict about the CL2 as a whole ?
would it make any sense here
Considering information technology becomes confusing in few questions in which -ing is used to modify the preceding clause (whereas information technology fabricated more sense to modify preceding noun by using relative pronoun)
(i.due east tin such cases of modifier be considered as a DESCRIPTION of the preceding clause)
(if possible Delight explain with an case for this incertitude )
How-do-you-do there,
Thank you for posting your dubiety here.
I am non sure what you mean to convey through the clause analysis. So here is how we would break the sentence with Choice B into clauses.
The 32 species that make upwardly the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the beast known as the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long and famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
Cl. 1: The 32 species
Cl. 2: that make up the dolphin family unit
Cont. of Cl. 1: are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known every bit the killer whale, growing as large as 30 feet long and famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
And then every bit highlighted, the kickoff clause has two verbs "are related" and "include", and the second clause has one verb "brand up".
Now the comma + verb-ing modifier "growing" modifies the preceding clause "The 32 species... are related... and include...." I thing to always keep in mind almost the verb-ing modifiers is that they denote some activity. That's why we call them "verb-ing" modifiers. The action that they denote must have a doer. Mostly, the doer of the action denoted bu the "comma + verb-ing" modifiers is teh Discipline of the modified clause.
In this case. the Discipline of the modified clause is "The 32 species". Now ask yourself, do the 32 species grow as big as 30 anxiety long? Certainly not. This reply is absolutely illogical. Then nosotros run across here that the action denoted by the "comma + verb-ing" modifier does not brand sense with the Subject of the modified clause. Hence, use of "comma + verb-ing" is wrong in Choice B.
You tin can read the following article for more information on this topic:
usage-of-verb-ing-modifiers-135220.html
Hope this helps.
Wish y'all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year's day.
Cheers.

Love Friends,
Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
marine wrote:
The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be thirty feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
(A) include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is
(B) include the brute known equally the killer whale, growing as big every bit 30 feet long and
(C) include the animal known every bit the killer whale, growing upward to thirty anxiety long and beingness
(D) includes the animal known as the killer whale, which can abound equally large as 30 anxiety long and is
(E) includes the animal known every bit the killer whale, which tin grow to be 30 feet long and information technology is
Pregnant is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of the crucial part of this judgement is that the 32 species that brand upward the dolphin family include the animal known every bit the killer whale, and the killer whale can grow to be xxx feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
Concepts tested here: Discipline-Verb Agreement + Meaning + Verb Forms + Parallelism
• The introduction of the present participle ("verb+ing"- "growing" in this instance) after comma mostly leads to a cause-consequence relationship.
• "being" is only to be used when information technology is part of a noun phrase or represents the passive continuous verb tense; the apply of passive continuous must be justified in the context.
• Whatsoever elements linked by a conjunction ("and" in this sentence) must be parallel.
A: Correct. This answer choice correctly refers to the plural noun "32 species" with the plural verb "include". Moreover, Selection A correctly refers to the atypical noun "the killer whale" with the singular pronoun "its". Further, Pick A uses the phrase "which tin grow to exist 30 feet long", conveying the intended meaning - that the 32 species that make upwardly the dolphin family include the creature known every bit the killer whale, and as a separate action, the killer whale can abound to be 30 anxiety long and is famous for its ambitious hunting pods. Additionally, Option A maintains parallelism betwixt "tin can grow to be xxx anxiety long" and "is famous for its ambitious hunting pods". Besides, Option A is gratuitous of whatsoever awkwardness or back-up.
B: This reply choice alters the significant of the sentence through the phrase "growing as big as xxx anxiety long"; the use of the "comma + present participle ("verb+ing" - "growing" in this sentence) incorrectly implies that the 32 species that make upward the dolphin family include the creature known as the killer whale, and as a event , the 32 species can abound to exist up to 30 anxiety long and are famous for their ambitious hunting pods; the intended significant is that the 32 species that brand upwardly the dolphin family include the animal known as the killer whale, and as a separate action the killer whale tin can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its ambitious hunting pods; please remember, the introduction of the nowadays participle ("verb+ing"- "growing" in this case) after comma generally leads to a cause-effect relationship. Further, Option B incorrectly refers to the plural noun "32 species" with the singular pronoun "its". Additionally, Selection B uses the needlessly wordy phrase "as big as 30 feet long", leading to awkwardness and back-up.
C: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "growing every bit big equally 30 feet long"; the employ of the "comma + present participle ("verb+ing" - "growing" in this sentence) incorrectly implies that the 32 species that make up the dolphin family unit include the fauna known as the killer whale, and equally a effect , the 32 species can abound to exist upwards to 30 anxiety long and are famous for their aggressive hunting pods; the intended meaning is that the 32 species that make up the dolphin family include the animal known as the killer whale, and as a separate activity the killer whale tin can abound to be xxx anxiety long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods; please remember, the introduction of the nowadays participle ("verb+ing"- "growing" in this case) after comma by and large leads to a cause-issue relationship. Farther, Selection C incorrectly refers to the plural substantive "32 species" with the singular pronoun "its". Additionally, Selection C is awkward and needlessly wordy due to its employ of the word "being"; please remember, "being" is only to be used when it is part of a noun phrase or represents the passive continuous verb tense; the utilise of passive continuous must be justified in the context.
D: This answer choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun "32 species" with the singular verb "includes". Farther, Pick D uses the needlessly wordy phrase "as big as 30 feet long", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.
E: This answer choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun "32 species" with the singular verb "includes". Further, Selection E fails to maintain parallelism betwixt "can grow to be 30 feet long" and "information technology is famous for its ambitious hunting pods"; please think, whatever elements linked by a conjunction ("and" in this sentence) must be parallel.
Hence, A is the best answer choice.

A very practiced question to clarify the features of participial phrase modifiers. The rule is that, when participial phrases are gear up off past commas (other than at the beginning of a sentence), they tin human activity as adjectives modifying almost whatever noun in the previous clause, most often the field of study of the previous clause.
In your example, "Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summertime, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully since raised transplants from Norway began in 1975," we could encounter the "bringing..." clause as adverbial, modifying the verb "left" as its effect, OR as an adjective, in fact modifying the "eagles" -- either of which makes perfect sense. It would exist awkward, however, modifying the nearest noun, "summer." This is why it would exist incorrect, in this example, to supersede "bringing" with "which brings," as "which" past rule MUST modify the noun or noun idea immediately preceding information technology.
Usually, this means that participial modifiers are more flexible and therefore more likely to be correct in SC. However, in this wonderful case from the OG, the "grow" clause is definitely supposed to modify the noun right before it, "whale," and then the relative clause beginning with "which" is appropriate. "Growing," on the other hand, could modify the unabridged preceding clause (that is, the verb "are related" or the verb "include") or, most likely, the field of study of the previous clause, that is, the 32 species. Although it is not placed adjacent to the word "species," it is placed side by side to the clause of which "species" is the subject. Since either of those would be illogical, (B) and (C) innovate an unnecessary ambiguity into the sentence, although I'll betoken out that neither one is technically incorrect, since a participial phrase hither could, theoretically, modify "whales" equally well. It's only inferior to the relative clause modification selection given in (A).
In improver, it's worth noting that "growing" and "which can abound" have decidedly unlike meanings, then (B) and (C) introduce this problem, too.
For a clear example of the participial phrase at the end of a judgement modifying the subject of a preceding clause, consider this:
"The Colossus of Rhodes was i of the peachy feats of classical civilization and 1 of the famous Seven Wonders of the World, standing over 100 anxiety high and constructed in the early 3rd Century B.C.E."
Lo, at that place are even two such clauses!

The fault that i find with the sentence is "grow to be". The error is corrected by choices B and D. D is the virtually appropriate construction.

I think I may be wrong, but in B, shouldn't "growing as big as 30 feet long" but be "growing as large as xxx feet" (the long is redundant).
The same mistake crops upward in D.
In C, there is a shift in tense.
The "it" in Due east is non needed.
And so, I am going to go w/ A.

I pick B (parallel relative pronoun)
Since we have two relative pronoun which change "the killer whale"
i.which tin can grow to be 30 feet long---->growing every bit big as 30 feet long
2.which is famous for its aggressive hunting pods. ---famous for its agressive hunting pods.
A. the killer whale, (relative pronoun)which can abound to be 30 feet long and (verb)is
C. include the animal known as the killer whale, (relative pronoun)growing up to thirty feet long and being(which is being--passive relative)---Active non parallel passive
D. include the animal known as the killer whale, (relative pronoun)which can abound as big equally 30 feet long and (verb)is
Due east. include the animal known as the killer whale, (relative pronoun) which tin can grow to be 30 anxiety long and clause it is

The 32 species that brand upwards the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the beast known as the killer whale, which tin grow to be thirty anxiety long and is famous for its ambitious hunting pods.
"The 32 species" is the subject area here. 'that make upwards the dolphin family' is but extra infor most field of study. So ignore it.
The subject is plural, so we will await for ans choices with 'include'
Take D and E out.
Among A, B and C
(A) include the fauna known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is >> Correct
(B) include the animate being known as the killer whale, growing as big equally 30 feet long and >> 'Growing' and 'is famous' are non parallel.
(C) include the creature known as the killer whale, growing up to 30 feet long and being >> incorrect employ
Quote:
The one thing that struck me most nigh this question was the fact that the subject is "32 species that make up the dolphin family". How practice you lot effigy if such a large phrase is the subject?
Its a very simple Southward-V question. They have already done half piece of work for you. Expect at the sentence carefully.
The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact
The 'are' in sentence already tell you that the bailiwick is plural.
If you lot have question nigh HOW to identify subject in a judgement, so you might want to go through grammar basics. Aristotle SC grail has articulate and concise affiliate on grammar basics.

The options are wrong for this question
In D and E its includes not include.
C D and E are out because of errors

B is incorrect because Growing is modifying 32 species? Is this right This distorts the meaning of the judgement
And in option A information technology is the killer whale that can grow to exist xxx feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods
No, that not what happens in B.
Remember: COMMA + ING modifier the whole preceding clause.
With just an exception: ", including" Case "... her books, including Harry Potter."
With that said
The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact
B. include the fauna known every bit the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long and (...)
growing modifies the whole preceding clause, not the killer wale nor the 32 species. Modify the preceding clause mean two thing:
i)present the results of an action
2)add together information
If you want to modify a single noun "the killer whale" you cannot use COMMA + ING, but you accept to apply a noun modifier (such as "which").
Promise everything is clear

EDIT: I notice that this problem is non correctly stated. D/E are introduced with "includes", non include, in the correct OG problem (problem #67). A lot more people would be correct on this one, had they known to eliminate D/Eastward correct off the bat.
B) "the animal..., (verb-ing) "equally large as" is merely wrong. You shouldn't have a present participle in this case, and "as big as" is not the correct expression. B gone
C) Once more, verb-ing is wrong both for growing and existence. C gone
D) "as big as" is an awkward expression in general, but other than that this sentence looks nice. Keep every bit a contender.
East) "tin abound to be" is not the correct expression, also "information technology" is superfluous, eliminate Due east.
A) "tin can abound to be" implies that there is a probability that the/a killer whale grows upwardly to 30 feet, that makes perfect sense and is the intended meaning of the writer. Also, the "is" logically flows into famous. Between A and D, A sounds much, much better then we go with A.

How-do-you-do Govind, to identify whether the subject field is family or 32 species or something else, we demand to expect at the verb. Equally you have rightly figured out, include/includes is the verb hither. Equally you lot would capeesh, bailiwick is cypher simply the doer of the verb.
Then, to identify the subject, let'due south identify who/what is the doer of the verb.
In other words, who/what is the doer of include/includes.
In other words, who/what include/includes the animal known as the killer whale?
In the context of the sentence, it should be clear that the 32 species include the beast known as the killer whale.
And so, the 32 species is the subject and hence, the verb include is appropriate.
On a side note, the clauses in the first part of the sentence are:
i) The 32 species are closely related to whales
two) (The 32 species) include the animal known equally the killer whale
3) that make upward the dolphin family unit
Through this deconstruct as well, information technology should be axiomatic that the 32 species include the fauna known equally the killer whale.

After reading the comments i really someone to shed light on this question to confirm our reasoning.
A key thing to note in B and C is the presence of the participial phrase: growing....
Participial phrases of this nature (that appear towards the terminate of a clause) alter the subject of the preceding clause. In this case, that subject is 32 species.
So, at the very least, there is an ambiguity, because B and C seem to suggest that the 32 species are growing; from the context of the sentence, it is clear that actually the whale can grow.
This is as well a skillful reason why A is correct: which in A appropriately modifies whale, the nearest grammatically eligible noun.
p.s. Our book EducationAisle Judgement Correction Nirvana discusses participial phrases, their awarding and examples in significant particular. If you lot can PM you email-id, I can transport you lot the corresponding section.
I just got a pocket-size doubt with the caption provided by you. Patently the correct ans is OA A. Merely in case of B and C, growing modifies the Unabridged preceding clause and non the subject alone. As per my understanding, Growing every bit big equally........ and Growing up to be..... is a verbing modifier. A verbing modifier that appears after a clause and is preceded past a comma, modifies the entire preceding clause.
In this case modification of unabridged preceding clause, equally in options B and C is wrong.
OA A has the correct modification. Which modifies Killer Whale.
D and East can be ruled out for S-V agreement.
It would be overnice of you if yous can signal out where my thinking is wrong. Please guide me.

S_V agreement trouble in D&Eastward. 32 Species (Plural) _ Includes (singular) - wrong.
D Eastward Eliminated.
Growing is Verb-ing modifier and wrongly modifying 32 species. B C eliminated
Equally big as & Long together are unnecessary. Eliminate B D
A remains.

SUBJECT-VERB Agreement
you see "include" vs "includes". this is a singular/plural split up, and so you know that you should expect for the subject of this verb.
looking back through the sentence, nosotros run into that "32 species" is the subject, and that a plural verb is thus required.
two ways to tell this:
(a) the desired verb is PARALLEL to "are closely related to whales". since these two verbs are connected by "and", they must have parallel grammar. since "are" is plural, we need another plural verb.
(b) "that make up the dolphin family" is a modifier and tin therefore be excluded from our search for the bailiwick. the only possible discipline that'southward left, then, is "32 species".
this kills d/e.
--
Redundancy
you don't say both "as big every bit..." and "long" in the aforementioned judgement. you can use only 1 of these words, both of which express the same idea (i.e., length or size).
this kills b/d.
--
-ING MODIFIER FOLLOWING COMMA
this blazon of modifier modifies the unabridged preceding clause.
this is casuistic in the example of "growing upwards to 30 feet long", because the proffer is that the 32 species of the dolphin family unit grow up to this long as a consequence of beingness closely related to whales, etc.
this is actually two problems. one, the modifier refers to the incorrect agent/noun (the 32 species, rather than just the killer whale as intended), and, two, the "-ing" makes this modifier modify the entire clause rather than just a noun, a situation that makes no sense.
this kills b/c.
--
but (a) remains. in that location are other bug, too; for example, the "and" at the finish of (b) introduces faux parallelism, "existence" in (c) is problematic, and "information technology" in (e) violates parallelism.

Hi Palelemon,
I would like to add together something to the usage of 'being' here. Many posts say that usage of 'being' is wrong in GMAT which isn't the example. Similar y'all said, 'existence famous' is ungrammatical. I would like to differ. Firstly, 'Being famous' isn't a clause/argument.
Lets say 'Being famous is enjoyable'. Hither being is used every bit a noun and combined with the verb 'is', the sentence is absolutely fine.
Secondly, being can exist used for continuous tenses. Eg: He is existence mean.
We accept official evidences in the OG as well where the correct choice contains being.
(Please refer to the discussions regarding 'existence' by E-GMAT).
Hither the usage of being would be wrong since Being famous for its aggressive hunting pods will then take no verb and would event in a fragment. (Existence famous is the noun here without a verb).

Why is Due east wrong?
In A and B with include, it's talking about one killer whale but includes conveys killer whales are more than one, no?
Also, don't we need it in A for it to exist correct?

The subject of the verb "include" is "species", which is plural. (The 32 species include xxxx)
East is wrong considering the plural subject "species" does non lucifer with atypical verb "includes"..
The verb does not bespeak whether the object is singular or plural. The object of the verb "include" could be singular or plural.
Here the object "the killer whale" is singular, one of those 32 species. "The killer whale" does not depict a unmarried animal, but the species every bit a whole. Nonetheless "the killer whale" is singular - i species. Definite article "the" can be used to depict a species as a whole.

I was able to mark the correct answer choice. But to better my understanding that why an respond option is wrong, i got one doubt.
Please clarify.
Option E
includes the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and information technology is
Higher up option tin be ruled out because the verb includes does not agree with plural subject.
However if the option option is changed as below
include the beast known as the killer whale, which tin can grow to be 30 feet long and it is
Now is the to a higher place answer choice incorrect?
Is the usage of information technology incorrect ?

Option Eastward
includes the animal known every bit the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 anxiety long and it is
Above option can exist ruled out because the verb includes does not agree with plural subject.
However if the option choice is inverse every bit below
include the animal known as the killer whale, which tin can abound to be thirty feet long and it is
Now is the above answer choice incorrect?
Is the usage of it incorrect ?
Hi Sahil,
Thanks for posting your dubiousness here.
The reason why the modified version of Selection Eastward is wrong is that the listing is not grammatically parallel at present. The elements in the listing are equally follows:
- 1. which can grow to be 30 feet long and
2. it is
Please note that while the showtime entity in the list is dependent clause, the second is an independent clause. Since both the information pertain to killer whale, which should be uses as the subject of both the verbs can abound and is continued by the connector and to create the right parallel list.
Promise this helps.
Thank you.
